The Third International Event of the WASTE Project in Birgu, Malta

Welcome to the official page recapping the success of the Third International Event of the WASTE project, which unfolded in the charming town of Birgu, Malta, from November 9th to November 14th.

This six-day event brought together international delegations, experts, and community representatives to delve into the crucial theme of “Circular Economy and Waste Management.”

Day 1: Arrival and Welcome
The event kicked off with the arrival and accommodation of international delegations, followed by participant registration. The Mayor of Birgu, Mr. John Boxall, extended a warm welcome in his opening speech. The day concluded with a delightful welcome dinner, setting the stage for the days ahead.

Day 2: Workshops and Site Visit
Participants were introduced to the workshops focusing on “Circular Economy and Waste Management.” The day included a presentation on the “Circular Economy Action Plan” and EU sustainability initiatives. A highlight was the visit to the WASTESERV waste management plant in Magħtab, providing firsthand insights into Malta’s waste management practices.

Day 3: Practices and Celebrations
Delegations showcased circular economy practices, fostering knowledge exchange. A guided tour of La Valletta enriched the cultural experience. The evening featured a gala dinner celebrating the 30th anniversary of Maltese Local Councils, marking a milestone in the country’s local governance.

Day 4: Community Engagement
This day focused on engaging communities, gathering thoughts on circular economy practices. Visits to Ħaġar Qim and Mjandra Temples and Mosta WWII Shelters added historical and cultural dimensions. Integrational activities facilitated intercultural dialogue, fostering cooperation among partner organizations.

Day 5: Operational Meeting and Debates
An operational meeting for the fourth International Event set the agenda for future endeavors. Debates and problem-solving activities, including a ‘Truth and Lies’ game about waste management, encouraged active participation. The day concluded with a farewell dinner and gift exchanges, fostering camaraderie among participants.

Day 6: Departure and Achievements
The event culminated with a formal greetings ceremony and the departure of delegations. The successful implementation of the event resulted in several achievements, including:

  • Sensitization on Circular Economy

  • Promotion of EU Actions for Sustainability

  • Sharing of Best Practices

  • Direct Experience in Malta’s Waste Management

  • Active Community Engagement

  • Intercultural Dialogue and Cooperation

  • Visibility of the Project and EU Funding at the 30th Anniversary Ceremony for Maltese Local Councils
