The Fifth International Event of the WASTE Project took place from August 18 to 22, 2024, in Lahti, Finland, a city known for its forward-thinking approach to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The event brought together delegations from multiple European countries to explore waste management, recycling, and circular economy initiatives, as well as to discuss the future challenges and collaborative efforts within the project framework.

Day 1: Warm Welcome and Introduction

The event kicked off with the arrival of the international delegations, who were warmly greeted by local volunteers in Lahti. Following an initial meeting and introduction to the event’s theme, participants engaged in integrational activities in Lahti’s picturesque city center. The opening day set the tone for an immersive and collaborative experience.

Day 2: Learning from Lahti’s Best Practices

On the second day, the delegates visited the Kujala Waste Management Center, a hallmark of Finland’s efficient waste management system. Here, Ms. Päivi Oksanen, a regional expert, led a seminar on Lahti’s innovative waste management practices. The day also included a tour of Lahti’s city center, a visit to the Winter Olympic Games Center, and a panoramic view from the city’s observation tower.

Day 3: Circular Economy and Future Cooperation

The day began with a visit to the Patina Recycling Center and Second-Hand Shop, where Ms. Katja Ålander delivered insights on Lahti’s circular economy initiatives. In the afternoon, the Ski Museum hosted a pivotal workshop titled “Future Themes of Cooperation.” This workshop allowed each partner to share their experiences from the WASTE project and discuss future collaborations focused on sustainability. Ms. Jaana Kuula from the City of Heinola provided an enriching presentation on regional recycling measures.

The day concluded with a gift exchange ceremony, solidifying the bonds formed during the event.

Day 4: Education and Declaration

Day four took place at the Salpaus Further Education School, where Ms. Elisa Hassinen introduced participants to Finland’s VET education system and its sustainability initiatives in the construction industry. The day’s highlight was the seminar that followed, where the participants worked together to draft the final WASTE Partnership Declaration, addressing “Future Challenges and Perspectives.” This collaborative group work produced a blueprint for future actions aimed at fostering sustainability across Europe.

The day ended with traditional Finnish activities, including fishing and rowing in a “church boat” at the Asikkala Salpaus Campus, offering a perfect blend of culture and relaxation.

Day 5: Departure and Reflections

On the final day, the delegations gathered for a farewell ceremony, reflecting on the success of the event and the friendships formed. The teams departed with a renewed sense of purpose and concrete plans for future collaboration in the fields of sustainability and waste management.
